Tappers Story ~ Tapt Dancin Cat is the realisation of Ray Heslin’s dream of wanting to buy and import a horse from America.
He had always showed horses and the kids did Pony Club as youngsters. He enjoyed this association and wanted to maintain an interest in horses. He also enjoyed occasional trips to Tamworth and Toowoomba to watch the Futurities.
The Heslins and their family had always been friends with American horse trainer, Chris Cox. Chris and his family had lived in Australia when he was a child before he returned to America where his career as a horse trainer blossomed. The Heslin’s remained firm friends with Chris and watched his career go from strength to strength.
With interest in Cutting as a motive, they made the trip to America to visit Chris and to attend the US NCHA Futurity at Fort Worth in 2008. Full of enthusiasm from this great event he gave instructions for Chris to source the best colt he could find.
He found a weaner colt at the Fort Worth Quarter Horse Sale. After studying his dam and his paternal dam, he was extremely impressed. His siblings were exceptional and no part of his pedigree showed any weakness. Chris recommended the colt to Ray with full confidence. Receiving the go ahead, he purchased Tapt Dancin Cat at auction as a weaner.
The colt was left with Chris who broke him in and prepared him for the Futurity. Unfortunately, due to other commitments, Chris wasn’t able to show Tapt Dancin Cat at the Futurity and with a catch rider he finalled in the John Deere Division. The decision was then made to export him to Australia.
The idea was to show Tapt Dancin Cat at the 2011 NCHA and time was of the essence to have him through quarantine and prepared in time. Arriving in Australia with a very tight schedule of just 5 weeks till the Futurity, he was sent straight to Todd Graham.
After a hectic preparation Todd had him at his absolute best and his first big win came after those 5 frantic weeks with a win in the NCHA Derby.
This win is not only testament to his brilliant ability, but also his attitude and temperament. To be uplifted from one side of the world, rushed through an unsettling time in quarantine, started with a new trainer, a short preparation and then to win a major event is simply phenomenal. His performance card since this first win shows that it was no fluke and Tapper continues to be one of the greatest cutting horses Australia has seen.
